Finding That Work-Life Balance

As your best friend at work, I'm here to tell you: Take care of yourself!

You can't give anything to anyone else, including work, if you don't give to yourself first. It's a little cliche, but you can't pour from an empty cup.

So. The eternal question: How do you find that balance? I understand it's especially difficult in our current climate when it seems like we're all tied to the computer and our emails at all hours of the day and night. My first piece of advice is this: set boundaries.

If you have to lock your email for certain hours of the day (ie: the middle of the night) DO IT.

If you need to schedule an hour block in the middle of your day so you can eat and not take meetings or write that email, DO IT.

If you need to set an out of office for your family dinners every night, DO IT.

Protect your time.

Look, I get it. I have an almost-two-year-old. My workday is all over the place. My eight hours are made up over 12-16 hours every day. But that's because there are certain times during the day that I hold sacred. I'm always "online" by 8 am, and focused at my desk by 9:30 am, I play with my daughter from 1-2 pm before her nap, I work during, then we play more after her nap. I also absolutely don't work during dinner; we eat at the table as a family every night. I'm guilty of checking emails and working at 9 pm after she goes to bed, but that's the schedule that works for me.

Figure out what works for YOU. Make it happen.

Take 10 minutes to craft the perfect cup of coffee every morning. Wear the cute clothes. Put on your pump-up music. Start your day off the way you want and set yourself up for success. Put up those out-of-office messages. Utilize time blocking. You can do this!

As always, if you need help figuring out what works for you or how to use these tools, I'm here for you. What else are friends for?
